Shaking at speed and burning smell
« on: March 09, 2018, 11:11:04 am »
Hiya, I’m new here so apologies if I’ve posted in the wrong section.

I was after a bit of advice, my 2007 Mazda 6 appears to have some kind of problem. I noticed two weeks ago (on the motorway) it started struggling, it was hard to get it past 60 and it felt shakey, also there was a burning smell inside the car like plastic burning. Luckily it happened near to home so I got home, left it till the next day and my brother had a drive in it to see what was happening and it was back to normal again.

Fast forward two weeks with no problems (I’m a regular motorway driver) it happened again yesterday minus the smell.

Then again this morning it happened again and I could smell the burning outside of the car near the front when I got out, not inside the car.

It seems to drive fine on normal roads at lower speeds, I’ve only started getting the problem at around 60 and above.

I intend on getting it looked at next week but wondered if anyone else has had this or knows what it could be?

Thanks

Front brake caliper(s) have or are seizing when they get hot, common enough problem but one you need to get sorted asap.

Don't know about the burning smell but could the shaking be a wheel balance problem? Check to see if any of the weights have come off the rims.

Thanks so much for the replies, currently at work so dipping in here when I can.

Saddler - that’s how it feels, something like that but the burning smell throws me off.

Cee-jay-Cee..  thanks, yes, it does seem to happen when I’ve been in the car a while, it’s like somethings got hot.

My brother said it could be clutch related although my clutch seems to feel fine, no slipping etc.

I would also bet that it is the calliper, been there, done that. Drive for a few miles and stop the car. Go to the wheel, it should be hot and smelly.
