Tyre Recommendations?
« on: February 02, 2012, 08:24:21 pm »
Hi,

I realise that this is quite an emotive subject, but it's time to replace the tyres on my 2010 2.2 sport (225/45/18). I have been looking on the likes of BlackCircles and TyreShopper and have narrowed it down to 3 possibles:

1. Dunlop SP Sport 01 - based on same vendor as OEM, and mid price (~£160each)
2. Continental Sport Contact 3 - Have had the SC2's before and happy with them, but are pricey at £190 each
3. Hankook / Falken / Kumho budget options - based on being more cost effective.

I bought an 18" alloy as a spare and put a Falken Ziex912 on it as a cheap asymetric tyre to make sure it worked well with the SP2050's on the car originally, but luckily have never had the need to use it so don't know if it's absolutely useless or not. But it's UTQ numbers show the same traction and temperature ratings as the 2050's but with better wear (360 plays 280) figures. I note that the RE040/RE050 bridgestones they now use for OEM's have a treadwear figure of only 140 so although they may be grippy they probably won't last long.

I spend 99% of the time on the motorway, so noise and wear are more important than ultimate grip in the corners - Any suggestions / input / prefernces out there?

Thanks
Garry

I went with the continental. Got them for £ 326 (for two) from Mazda fitted. They were cheaper than anyone including the Internet. However, it does throw the tracking off and Mazda had to make some adjustment to make the tyres work with the car. hope it helps

I've had Uniroyal Rainsport 2s on the front and now Avon ZZ3s all round. Both types are far better than the OEM Dunlops. ;D

My previous car also came with Dunlops, that was an Octavia Vrs Tdi. The Mazda also came with them. Was glad to get them changed !

I'm running some Kumo ku31's on the front, for the money they're excellant, just as good if not better than the Bridgestone er300's that i took off.Think they were around £56 each.
I had RE40's on my last car, fine in the dry but not so good in the wet!

I have Falken 912 on front, done 16000 miles so far.
Have Bridgestones on rear which came with car and were new and they have done 24000 miles so far.
Did have Bridgestones on front and changed them to Falkens when worn down.
Less road noise from Falkens compared to Bridgestones.
I would recommend Falkens over Bridgestones.

Thanks everyone - the Conti price from Mazda seems good - I'll see what they can do. I'll also avoid the Dunlops!

Thanks
Garry

Hi,

I have been running with the Continental contact sport 2 and have got great longevity from them although they are just starting to go now and i will probably consider the goodyear f1 asymmetric, which are pricey but a very good tyre and offer reduced road noise! :) hope this helps!

I've always been partial to Toyo Proxes, loved them on my MX6. Anyone tried then on a 6?

I'm currently suffering a lot of road noise - cheapies put on the car by the previous owner. Are the Avon's quiet?

I'd go with the Falkens in 18" - seen them for £110 a corner which seems pretty good

Thanks Chaps, I'll look into it. I need 205/55/16s so I'm hoping they'll be a little cheaper than £120 a corner.

Also had a quick look at Which who recommend the Continental Premium Contact. Friend has them on his Golf red 5 and he loves them.
