Checked my oil strainer pick up
« on: November 07, 2011, 01:59:18 pm »
These cars have a history of blocked oil strainers/pick ups, plenty of horror stories on the old site, so i decided to check mine, the cars done 45000mls, the oil has been changed every 6-8000mls on average.
The job itself is'nt bad, i used car ramps, handbrake on,bricks choked the rear wheels and left the car in 1st gear.To access the sump you remove the undercover tray (10mm bolts and a crosshead for the plastic plug),then drain the oil, you need to move the water pipes to oneside, held at both side by 10mm bolt, this lets them swing out of the way to drop the sump. The sump is held on with 10mm bolts, note the 3 shorter ones when you remove them, i used tipex to mark the sump as a reminder, once all the bolts are undone you need to prize the sump off (carefully) it's held in place by silicon NO GASKET (so remember to buy some before you start this job) I used a narrow paint scraper to work round the sump and break the seal, you can also use the welded nut on the sump and screw a bolt in to lift the other side.
Once the sump is off you'll see the oil pick up, if it's full of crap it'll need removing and cleaning, gladly mine was very clean!
Refit in reverse order, make sure all the gasket surfaces are clean before you apply the sealer and also the sump bolts are cleaned of any silicon from their threads, otherwise you could damage/split the alloy mounting plate!
Will try and post pictures when finished.

Slidey,
You have mentioned the oil pickup as a problem, but is it only
second generation 6's that have had this problem?  Seen it mentioned here
and had a hell of a problem getting the sump off, so gave up!!

Will try again on next oil change.  No signs of problem on a 2003 mazda 6
with 120k on the clock....

It seems to effect all models, i've seen a couple of posts where this has happened on the new 2.2l engine.
The sump can be a bitch to get off, i found using a paint scraper ideal for  breaking the instant gasket seal.

Is the oil strainer checked during an annual service?

Rats, no the pick up is'nt check on an annual service, it's not a service item so it'll never be checked.

That's annoying ill have to look at getting this done myself. How often should I check it, seeing as dropping the sump is not something I want to have to carry out often.

I would do it at your next service if you are that worried about it, you're going to drop the oil anyway so it would make sense to remove the sump and clean the strainer out at that time. I wouldn't do it at every service though.

I suppose the answer to not having a blocked suction strainer is in your first sentence.
Change the oil Frequently.

Mazda6 2.2 Oil pick up removal query
« Reply #8 on: September 22, 2017, 06:51:30 pm »
I have read that it is advisable to remove the sump and check the oil pick up gauze. I understand how to remove the sump but then , if the oil pick up gauze is not clean, how do I remove it for cleaning? Does it screw off? .. or twist off? I don't want to damage it.

I'm not sure about removal but with the sump removed i think you should be able to clean it in situ with a brush and some diesel fuell  then flush it through and then oil and filter change. Or parrafin if it's solid gunk then diesel fuel then flush it all out. If you want to remove it you will have to enquire further hope this helps.

Hi Dave... about to do mine soon. How do you remove the gauze to clean it? ... Does it unscrew or is there another simple way to release it?

Thanks Steve. I will do that if it is not simple to remove.
I have seen a video on Youtube of the (well clogged) pick up gauze removed but they did not advise how to remove it. As far as I could see, it has 3 male + 1 female "lugs" holding it in the pickup.

Finally got around to removing the sump.
Gauze is covered about 3/4 by a plate with a big arrow on it.
It appears to have 5 little lugs holding it on.
Do I just lever it off ? ... or is there a hidden retaining bolt somewhere?
