Sooty Smell in Cabin
« on: January 20, 2015, 06:44:00 pm »
Hi,

I'm getting a sooty smell coming into the cabin on my Mazda 2011 2.2 180 Sport - mainly when moving slowly / stopped in traffic but occasionally I get a lingering whiff on the motorway.

Exhaust doesn't sound like its blowing and its far from clear where it's emanating from! Anyone else had the same issue / know where to start?

Thanks,
Craig

Could it be the odd musty smell at the point the air con switches off below 4C and when it stops drying the incoming air ?

That's possible as the external temperature has been hovering around that point recently.

I didn't realise it engaged the A/C compressor at temperatures that low as I've got the cabin temperature set to 20 - 22 degrees and even though the A/C light is on it's got the word 'Eco' on the dash so I'd always assumed it wouldn't engage the compressor and just make use of the cold air from outside if it needed to.

How often? When the DPF regenerates it creates an odd smell too.

Okay there's something to this A/C idea. If I manually override the climate control and press the A/C button to turn it off then I don't get the smell for the duration of the journey.

Can someone please move this post to the ventilation section as I no longer believe it to be an engine / exhaust leak!

I've had another suggestion that it's the auxiliary a/c heater as it only kicks in when the temperature is low. As the smell has completely stopped in the last few days since its got a few degrees warmer that sounds logical.

But how can I stop auxiliary a/c heather stop sticking the cabin out when it kicks in!

I know. That damned heather gets everywhere.
