Perrys, Farlington in Portsmouth
« on: January 09, 2012, 09:33:10 pm »
Hi all.
thought i'd add my story.
after having the dreaded flashing DPF light whilst 140 miles into france, tip toed the car home and straight into Perrys.
Welcoming enough, not too long to wait for the service, happy days there.

Not so happy with the outcome of the service though, checked the oil when the wife got the home and it was a couple of mm over the full makr on the gauge and therefore closer to the Top mark than it shouldve been. So i managed to find an email for the branch manager, sent him a "not happy-o-gram" and he was more than helpful and said bring the car back in and they'd drain and re-fill the oil to the correct level.
also on our bill was a charge for Screenwash??!?!!? I struggled to see why screenwash was needed in a basic oil change service!?!?!?

my wife did this, and while they did it they said to give them an hour and it'd be done. 90 mins later still no call so she went back to the branch anyways and then waited another 20 mins whilst trying to entertain our 20 month old son.
Then at last, service manager said car was ready, no bill to pay (i should bl00dy well think not!!)
She asked if all docs were in the car, to which the service manager said yes. so she got all set up in the car, baby in seat, checked the glove box, and no paperwork!!!
so out with the baby again, back in the showroom, and another rant at the service manager who apologised and found the paperwork "out the bacK".

So not for the first time, massively upset by main dealerships antics! tread carefully people.

Sorry to hear your tale.

Maybe I can explain the Screenwash comment.

My Mazdas have been serviced by Barnett's in Dundee, and never had a problem with them.  One occasion when I was collecting the car, I too noticed Screenwash being listed as one of the materials used, along with various oils, filters, seals, and so on.  I queried it as I knew the screenwash reservoir had been full when I took it in.

It was explained to me that the service price is fixed, dependent upon the mileage, and that's fair enough as I was quoted a fixed price each time I went in.

However, their workshop system is linked to inventory and the invoice shows a complete breakdown of costs of parts and labour, and when added up with the VAT comes to the fixed price total - every time (I checked it).  This is so that when they check the screenwash and "some" is needed for the average customer, then over the month what they use is averaged out and accorded to each service.

That means they don't have to measure and charge for the actual amount used, they just top it up if needed.

As I agreed to a fixed price, this seems fair enough to me.

We bought Wifey's Mazda 3 Sport from Perry's in Portsmouth, and it was not a very good experience.  The sales manager in particular was (in my opinion) quite arrogant, and they even balked at letting both me and Wifey do their standard test drive lap (about 5 miles) - "you want two test drives!?!?".  One of the salesmen even said "I sometimes forget it's your money that you're spending"!

Outrageous - but unsurprising as the post includes the dreaded "P" word.

Although this is an old thread its still relevant I guess, I use Perry's of Farlington for my servicing in order to keep the warranty valid. I bought the car new from them (Dec 2011) so its both sides of the operation (sales and servicing) that I experienced.

The sales side, like any other main dealer, was full of attention and promises which quickly dried up once I had actually bought the car. The salesman has now retired but was decent enough and very attentive but it was  probably this that made such a stark contrast once the deal was done! I don't even think he recognised me when I went back about a month later but hey ho.

On the servicing front, I find them very expensive and as an example; I wanted some coolant which is 'special' apparently and has to be a particular type for the engine in the Mazda. Perry's wanted around £45 plus vat for 5 litres which I thought was quite excessive for coolant no matter how special!  I found another MX5 specialist nearby who were selling the exact same brand and size for about £16 inc vat.

Another time I needed to replace the drivers door mirror which has been smashed during a close encounter on a country road with a schoolboy racer coming in the opposite direction. I saw several used examples on the net but none in the correct colour. So, I called Perry's to get a quote and specifically asked if the mirror came in parts or did I need to buy it complete. They reliably informed me that it was all in one piece and would cost (around) £160 plus vat, I enquired as to the cost of fitting ... about an hour labour so £90 plus vat I was told!

Imagine my surprise when having read up on the net, I went to remove the broken mirror my self and it took less than 4 mins to completely remove it - from door locked to mirror off! It took about the same time to replace it. Needless to say I didn't get them to fit it. When I did eventually pick up the new mirror, there were two boxes - one was the complete mirror minus the coloured back trim and the other contained the 'Stormy Blue Mica' trim in it. When I explained I had declined the offer of several mirrors on 'parts finder' websites because none of them were the right colour he told me I could have bought the coloured trim separately. NOT IMPRESSED!

So, for me they are just another typical main dealer trying to reach target sales figures and charging the earth for servicing costs. I am trapped in some ways due to the warranty - if you have a new car and have it serviced anywhere other than the main dealer then the warranty is invalidated.  Whilst waiting in the courtesy area during servicing, I have often heard their price quotes to unsuspecting owners (on the phone) following MOT advisories/failures and they are, in a word exorbitant!  I have a mechanic whom I have used for years and he genuinely quotes less than half price for all the jobs that they quote me for (and he uses the genuine factory recommended times for jobs) but alas I can't use him on my Mazda unless I am prepared to invalidate the warranty. The main warranty has run out now but the paint warranty is still valid - and it looks like I may need to claim too! - more of that in another post if it comes to it!

To sum up, Perry's are probably no worse than any other main dealer but my personal experience of them doesn't leave me impressed.

Just my 2p worth

That isn't true. By law you can have it serviced anywhere you like as long as it is in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations and specifications. Obviously the dealers would prefer you to believe otherwise. The problem with Mazdas is that the service indicator needs to be reset which requires Mazda software which is expensive and not many independent garages are willing to fork out for it. You can have it done at a Mazda dealer but they may charge you around £70. Independent garages are unlikely to have access to the central computerised Mazda service record for the car which could influence its value when you come to sell if not updated.

The other issue with having your car serviced independently is that if you have a warranty claim then the onus is on you to prove that you have had it serviced according to Mazda's specification.

So servicing elsewhere is perfectly legitimate but could give you hassle if you need to make a warranty claim and it will also rule out any 'goodwill' gestures from Mazda for things that go wrong and are not technically covered under warranty.

Fortunately I have a good relationship with my Mazda dealer at Horsham who have treated me fairly over the years and don't overcharge. I will be picking up my third 6, a Sport Nav, tomorrow having previously had two Mondeos before that.
