Old 2.3 Sport petrol v.s. Takuya 2.0 and Sport 2.5 petrol?
« on: September 27, 2016, 01:05:02 pm »
First post! After a stormy relationship for 6 years since acquiring my March 07 2.3 Sport, I am forced to move on (well, a third party who wasn't looking did that  >:( ). I had lost of reliability problems with the old car but these may have been more to do with the previous owner than Mazda itself - long story.

Anyway, I have always liked the look of the 08/12 styling (though the interion doesn't seem to have moved on that much) and am looking for either another used petrol Sport or a Takuya. Funds are limited and I suspect I will have to settle for the cheaper and more common Takuya. The Tamura is a possibility but the interior finish looks bland compared to the Takuya/Sport.

My question is how does the Takuya's 2.0 compare to my old 2.3 and the new Sport's 2.5? I didn't think the 2.3 was that sporty to be honest but I had been spoilt by a 187BHP Honda Prelude VTEC beforehand!

Also as I will be looking for a fairly high mileage but good condition car, can anyone tell me the major engine service intervals?

Many thanks!

2 litre Petrol servicing is 12000 miles or 1 year. Big service every other year.
If you look on here under some old threads there is a list of what peoples cars have done in huge mileages.
both Petrol and Diesels mentioned as far as I remember.
The 2.0 litre Takuya is not the fastest thing on 4 bits or rubber but if pushed will give a decent return.
For fuel if you need to know have a look on the Honest John real mpg web site.( Overall mid 30's to 40 mpg.)
Finding a used decent Petrol Mazda 6 will take a bit of looking for. There are not that many sold,as you know, plus  has  been said before ,if anyone has a decent one giving no bother, they tend to hang onto them.

Thanks. My old 2.3 was OK but I did have to have the chain changed after it stretched and earlier this year two of the coil packs went faulty on holiday in France! The engine has always clattered at start up when cold and latterly it has started to drink oil. I did some research which indicated this engine is more of a Ford than a Mazda. So I was wondering if the 2.0 (and 2.5) are related and if not, more refined and more efficient?

I had a 2.4 VTEC 190bhp and be honest the 2.5 is as good, no VTEC but power comes in earlier no different in mpg either.  But I do miss my 2.4 VTEC especially as a company has started remapping them. No mods for the 2.5 though.  No idea about the 2.0.

In a bit of a quandary - there are so many diesel Sports available compared to petrols. I don't mind driving a good diesel these days but I am concerned about potential costs regarding turbo and DPF problems, plus my moral side is troubled by the pollution :( I have now noticed some 2.0 petrols sports - might be a good compromise as I am seriously considering a Takuya; Sport = same engine but better equipment?

OK, the 2.0 petrol Sport is automatic only. Shame!

Is the auto on the 2.0 MZR DISI petrol any good? I could be persuaded but my wife might not be too keen.

The two litre Petrol in the Takuya is as far as I know based on a Ford block with mazda modifications.
Mine has FMCO imprinted on the dipstick.

The 2010 facelift 2.0 petrol is direct injection. I optimistically assumed that meant it was Mazda (MZR DISI ) technology but maybe they only did the head.

I think that is what is marked on the top of the engine cover.

Now I see a very attractive looking 2.2 diesel Sport not far from me - it's an 11 plate and definitely a facelift example. Am really torn now - should I go diesel or not?

Petrol every time. Not as fast but far more refined, especially on the 2010 facelift model, which I have.
