2008 2.0 diesel emitting blue smoke.
« on: April 12, 2017, 03:53:59 pm »
I test drove the above-mentioned car today and really enjoyed driving it.  The only fly in the ointment was that I kept seeing wisps of blue smoke in the rear view mirror whilst driving. The car has 117k on the clock and the salesman had sold the car to the previous owner 2 years earlier.  He didn't know what sort of use the car had enjoyed (motorway or local).  The car had been sitting in the yard for a few days before I drove it and I only took it a couple of miles up the road.  I parked the car and revved it but no smoke appeared.  It only showed up when the car was in motion.  I appreciate that this is not a lot of info to go on but any thoughts would be appreciated.  Should I take the plunge and buy the car or steer clear?  The car is only £2495 so I would be prepared to spend a couple of hundred quid to put minor issues right.

Burning blue smoke is normally associated with engine oil being burnt during combustion. Can be many
reasons from engine wear to Turbo or  other problems. With a car at 117k , if it gets worse
could be expensive to cure. Have a look under you heading on Google many reasons are explained.

I think I'd walk away from that one personally.

I agree, do not buy this car. I have the same car, with the same engine but it is registered in January 2009. It has 100K miles on the clock, bought at 76K miles from a franchise, and it makes no smoke.

Thanks guys.  Looks like I'll have to pass up on that one.  Shame as it was a high spec and drove really nicely.  Don't see many bargains on top spec cars in my neck of the woods. All the interesting stuff seems to be miles away. :-\

If you are buying from a franchise, the trip may be worthy. Just try to avoid independent dealers who buy from the auction and do not check their cars.
