Title: Mazda 6 stone chips
Post by: MZR-CD on May 21, 2012, 08:54:17 am
Hi all, I'm looking for advice on this. My car is just 12 months old and has 30k km on the clock - about 19k miles. The car is running great however the front bumper, bonnet, wings A pillars and roof are destroyed by stone chips. I expect there to be some stone chips but the sheer number of them on a low mileage car is not boding well for the next 2-3 years. It looks like a car with 5 times the mileage.

Has anyone had any success with approaching Mazda regarding paint issues? I understand the paint finish is of a poor quality anyway but I can't help but feel that the finish is particularly poor on my car. I have had it in a dealer previously regarding three large stone chips in the middle of the roof - the paint seemed to be particularly thin but they found no issue and I understand stone chips aren't Mazdas problem but surely a €30k + car should be able to withstand more than light touch of a pebble. I can see my car requiring an extensive respray in the not too distant future.

I was unfortunate enough to get my car shunted at the rear at two weeks old on a 61 plate. The whole car scratches if you just brush past it, this includes the rear tailgate and bumper painted by the Mazda dealer. looks like it is something we are stuck with.

My 6 sounds exactly like yours but like you say you would expect it on a car with high mileage which mine has (140k) getting bonnet bumper & front wings done in Nottingham next week , I'm sure when sprayed it will be a far better & more durable finish than what's on now !

I have rust on my roof... Mazda sad it is from the stone chips and there is nothing they can do under the warranty. The car is 59 plate and has 33k on the clock!

So disappointed with the quality of corrosion protection.

BTW; mazda quoted me £850 for the roof repair, nice ;)

I had the same problem and result with my car so got it sprayed locally for £200.

Hi guys I have a black 59 plate sport and the paint work is awful. My 5 yr old daughter was able to mark almost every panel using the wee plastic stem on the lid from a bottle of bubbles. If the paint can't take that there's no hope. The font end is peppered with stone chips the paint seems so thin with little protection offered. :(

I gather if it gets resprayed at a local body shop they can use a paint with greater durability than butter??

Perhaps we should look at the reason for stone chips. I believe there is a section in the manual that deals with this. It more or less says keep a large gap from the vehicle in front.

I think it also says
Avoid non tarmac roads
Avoid all roads with other road users on 'especially pedestrians as the speed they travel at chucks up millions of stones'.

This comment annoys me. All my stone chips are from lorries in the inside lane and some are even from the opposing carriageway.

The worst damage to the paint will happen on the doors from the stuff the wheels move around.

The continuous application water/mud will make the paint rough.

Maybe mudguards can help with that.

I am not sure if you can avoid stone chips if you drive the car.

Avoiding stone chips is impossible. But one thinh for sure the GH generation 6 and same generation 3 had better paint than the Skyactiv. Not too sure about the body as my 7 year old 6 almost had holes on the subframe.

Did they replace the subframe under warranty?
