Mazda 6 2.2d skyactiv 2014 Injector resistance reading
« on: March 23, 2021, 02:56:51 pm »
Hello,
I have 4 injectors in my car, that are reading open circuit. I have tested the multimeter, I am using and it works fine.
I am measuring them using the Ohm unit of measurement. I've tried higher and lower measuring units.
Does anyone know the rough Ohm rating of these injectors or is there something special about the way they work, that means I am reading them incorrectly?

The car had a common engine failure, which was that the exhaust cam lost all of it's lobes by being worn down.
Possibly, oil dilution causing the hydraulic lifters to jam and cause the rocker to stay in one position.
However, for some odd reason all of the injectors look like they have failed and are open circuit.

Can anyone supply a reading from a working injector ? or have documentation which can help?

Regards,

I think you need to try something like this:

Does the engine operate after the camshaft etc was replaced.
If yes what sort of average fuel mileage are you achieving, this will give an indication on the state of the injectors.
What year and how many miles has your car done.
If you remove the injectors like APAV's  attachment suggests they need to go back in the the same cylinders after the pockets have been scrupulously  cleaned  using a pocket cleaning kit, new sealing washers  fitted   and the Mazda  procedure used  for tightening them down of which you will need a very low rated torque wrench. Failure to do the above will result in more problems.

Following this the injectors need togo through an Injector Learn using Forscan.

If at any time the injectors have been removed and not refitted into the same cylinder then thy are required  to be re - coded.

So unless you know what you  are doing I would take the car to either the dealer  or an injection specialist. That procedure of APAV's does not look too safe and could cover your engine in diesel.
NEVER WHEN TESTING INJECTORS OF ANY TYPE PUT ANY PART  OF YOUR BODY IN LINE   OF THE SPRAY AS IT WILL ENTER YOUR BODY AND KILL YOU.

After cleaning the engine and replacing the head with a reconditioned head from ebay and a new gasket the engine started.
New injector sealing rings. The official mazda silver ones.
The oil was new. I manuallly lubricated the hydraulic lifters and cam lobes. I didn't put oil "into" the hydraulic lifters. I assumed they didn't need to be primed with oil, that would happen automatically.

Within a short time the engine went from fairly smooth sounding,  to tappy. On accelerating there was a knocking sound  from the drivers side of the engine. Which quitened down when idling.

When i removed the oil filler cap, i could see a mist of something moving around the area below the oil filler and insider the cylinder head.
No obvious smell from the oil filler cap. The cyclinder head was bought complete from a firm on ebay. All reconditioned.
I have since removed the sump and drained the oil. i've remove the piston rod end caps and inspected the bearings for scoring or damage and they look fine.
I haven't removed the crank yet, so can't say whether there is a problem there.

I'm pretty sure the engine oil is severely diluted despite the engine only running for about 5 - 7 minutes. I'm sure a mazda technician will have seen loads of these failed engines , with the low oil pressure warning and on inspection the exhaust cam lobes worn down to nothing. I'm at a loss as to why the engine is not running smoothly. No low oil pressure warning. No errors on the diagnostic reader. Prior to reassembling the engine, i cleaned all of the internal coolant and oil channels. No debris in the oil pickup filter or oil pump.

I am curious about the injectors. They read Open circuit on my multimeter on the ohm setting, however they must be working in order for the engine to run at all. I did wonder if it's possible for an injector to leak or be faulty in a way that more diesel than required is released into the cylinder. Therfore , excessive oil dilution. Perhaps an injector stuck open, if thats possible.

I'm sure some mechanic some where will have seen this issue before. I'd really appreciate help with it.

I would be very surprised if your injectors are stuck open. I wouldn't worry to much about continuity readings of injectors. All you have there is a coil which lifts the pressure off the springs which allows fuel through.
At the sake of repeating myself, does the engine ?un ok now?
There is a manufacturing problem with those injecto?s which causes 'cavitation erosion' of the nozzle tips causing excessive fueling leading to more frequent regens. Just because a DPF is regening frequently doesn't mean there is a problem with the DPF and it needs removing and ultrasonically cleaning  or àll manner of expensive sensors need changing.  No, the problem is in worn nozzle holes. Most dealers are not awàre of the problem and Mazda don't inform them of the symptoms, nor do any sensors.
I went through this problem during Covid and Mazda tried all sorts of excuses to blame the driver because the car wasn't been run on ?ong journeys, but it wouldn't have made any difference. Òne muppet said it was moisture trapped in the cylinders causing rusting, complete load of hogwash.
This problem shows up by a distinct change in fuel consumption, sump level rising  above the max line within  3k miles, frequent  regens with the frequency increasing. Yet the strange thing is the car runs we and sounds good.
Your previous problem of worn camshaft is becaue of incorrect heat treatment of cams and followers another known problem by Mazda, but they are not proactive but leave you to report it , hopefully outside of the warranty period. The other known problem, particularly with early cars is leaking injector pockets , the exhaust gasses contaminating the lube oil and causing blockage of suction filter and the wiping of the bearings.

It seems to be the practice these days that as soon as a problem develops with a car the owner sells it, says nothing about problems  and nor  do dealers  and a FSH   is hardly worth the paper its written on as it doesn't cover any failures.

Changing injectors is not cheap, looking at old injector nozzle hole is difficult as they are so small and you need a new injector side by side to compare the nozzle hole diameters.
I took photographs of mine but even fully blown up pior to pixilation  and using a Dslr  its still difficult to see.
Changing the injectors for new Mazda supplied ones you see  vast improvement in fuel consumption and a distinct drop in oil contamination  if Forscan is used to monitor the figures on a regular basis.
Every car I have owned I have kept a book on fuel consumption from day 1 as its the best way of telling you how the engine is performing. Plot the figure every time you fill up from a 1/4 tank  on a graph, after a year take a year average and start another graph showing Max,Min, Median and average from new and if there is a problem then the changes can be seen on both graphs, over a year and over several years.
