2.0d Won't Start following SCV Swap??
« on: November 28, 2015, 09:33:39 am »
Hi All,

Following some issues with my 2005 2.0d 143 stalling when coming to a stop, I decided to buy a new SCV as that seemed to be the recommended approach. I managed to get it changed over and when I tried to start, I got nothing at all. No crank, just the clicking of a relay.

The headlights are bright and don't dim when trying to start, so I don't think it is a dead battery, although I have the charger on right now. I have checked the fuses under the bonnet and they all look good, and there are no fault codes returned when I do a scan with the bluetooth OBD reader.

The missus is out for the day, so I have a stay of execution for now....

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

No crank and clicking of relays is the usual indication of a battery problem. See how it goes after a while on the charger.
Look at life through the windscreen, not the rearview mirror.

Thanks for the response, left it on the charger for 30 mins until it reckoned it was fully charged. Made no difference.

Tried a few other things:
  • Left the battery disconnected and on charge for an hours
  • Swapped out all relevant looking fuses and relays under the bonnet
  • Swore at it and wept

All to no avail.

Not sure where the starter is on this car to give it a whack and check all connection, any tips?

OK, so after many hours of pulling fuses and relays and swapping over the SCV twice more, it was none of those things.

Turns out I had knocked one of the connectors between the alternator and engine loose that are clipped onto a bit of steel sticking out. They both were still coupled and looked connected but at least one of them mustn't have had a good connection. After squeezing them back together, it fired up and is running well again.

Hopefully if someone else is a clumsy and stupid as me, this may help them out!

Thanks for the responses guys, but I think the problem here was entirely human...
