2.3L engine won't fire!
« on: April 11, 2016, 11:54:18 am »
Hi All,
I have a 53-plate Sport 2.3 which I recently bought cheap due to a misfire. The misfire only occurred at idle. It spluttered and hesitated while driving at town speeds, but once up to motorway speeds it never missed a beat.
The diagnostic told me it was the crankshaft sensor, which I have replaced. However when I then went to start the car, it wouldn't fire. The engine does crank, but it doesn't sound like it should. The best way to describe the sound is as if the starter hasn't engaged with the engine, but it has because the cams are turning when I turn the key.

There is fuel in the car, and all the electrics seem to be working. Can someone please help?

Side note: When I went to start the car to move it onto solid ground to jack it up, the engine fired up but was ticking horrendously at the top end, which it hadn't done the day before. I checked the oil....none on the dipstick. Topped the oil up, engine started fine, but ticking didn't stop. Didn't want to move the car while it was making that noise so I just put a paving slab under the car and jacked it up where it sat, but of course now it won't fire up at all.

Hope someone can help me :)

Hi
I had a misfire problem a while back.
Bought a new after market coil from ebay and made
things worse.
Ended up getting one from the scrappy that cured my problem.

when I had the problem starting was a problem.

I got a blue tooth obd reader of ebay and use a android program
called carista.

Do you have a engine light on.
Mine came on about 2 month's of driving with the problem
and the fault code was for misfire .
Also unplug the maf sensor and see what happens.
Check the plugs to see if they are all the same colour
and if any are wet.
If you have a cylinder that is down it would cause a ticking noise
as would a bad injector.

I would go for coil and leads as I was told that it is a very common problem.
Hope you sort it.
