Title: Steering issues

Hi,

Looking for some advice?

I have a '60 plate, 185 BHP Sport

A few months back I started experiencing a steering issue! When I turn the wheel left it feels like its grinding with a small resistance - you can only feel it when you're driving slowly - ie: when parking, pulling away, etc. I had a mechanic friend try it out and he's unsure - suggested it may be worth replacing the power steering belt?

I wondered if anyone else has experienced anything similar? Or have any ideas what this may be and a resolution?

I'm sure the power steering is electric on these models? In which there is no belt .

The first thing I would suspect would be a CV joint issue. If a CV joint is failing you will get a knocking or rumbling noise when you turn in one direction slowly. This tends to be a common problem with front wheel drive cars and normally due to a failed cover boot that protects the joint from dirt and moisture entry.

I have recently had a similar issue. It feels like something is grinding when turning to the left and is especially noticeable at slow speeds. I had a 162.5k service yesterday and dealer suspects it might need a new pinion (for the charge of c.£800!).

I'm thinking of changing the car anyway so may see if it gets any worse first!
