Engine noise at low revs
« on: November 15, 2013, 06:52:44 am »
I've just purchased a 2009 Mazda 6. I've really enjoyed my first few days of driving the car as its powerful, refined and handles very well. My only concern is an engine noise which occurs in first, second and third between  1300-1700 rpm. It seems to be from behind the dash board on the passengers side. It sounds to be a rotational/whirring noise, at odds with the quiet engine, it kicks in at about 1300 and then disappears after I pass 1700 rpm. Is this normal or do you think something could be wrong? Thanks

The noise happens whether I'm accelerating through this range of rpm or deaccelerating and coming back down the rpm scale. I thought it could be the turbo?

I had the car checked over by Mazda and they think the engine is fine.

However, after several months of driving something definitely sounds wrong when accelerating in 1st and 2nd. The engine noise is quite rough and more noisey than I would have expected from a high end car.

Mazdas certainly aren't high end cars but what do you mean more rough? If you punch the throttle while standing still and in neutral does the cars engine tone sound the same as when in 1st or 2nd? Can you record a sound/video clip?

I get the noise while in neutral if I depress the accelerator pedal. The noise appears to be coming from behind the engine (Dual mass flywheel?)

The flywheel is in the gearbox so it would be coming from the right on the engine bay(as you look in) generally the flywheel/clutch wear would give a shudder at a certain rev range in each gear. I'm at a loss tbh. Can only suggest trying to get a recording of it.

How many miles has your car covered?

I've tried recording a video of the engine in neutral but the sound is most apparent when accelerating in 1st or 2nd. I will try and film the noise from inside the car in the next few days.It definitely seems to be originating behind the engine block.

Only about 50K. I'm wondering if it is something related to the gears or the clutch?
