2008 2.0 Diesel Engine rattle when engine cold

Hi

I have 2008 2.0 Mazda 6 Sport Diesel and when i start the car cold it makes a hell of a rattle sound from the engine but goes away when the engine heats up to temp. Ive checked the oil and seems ok..Any ideas?

Drain and refill oil, replace oil filter asap?

There is a good chance the engine is already gone though.

It could be hydraulic lifters( tappets) that make this kind of noise. As you said once engine warms up noise goes away.
Oil goes into tappets and adjusts them to operate according to camshaft position, obviously cold oil is a bit slow at start untill warm, when it reaches its working temperature. Hence creating noise when engine is cold, dissapearing gradually as oil gets hotter.
