Fuel economy of the new Skyactiv diesel.
« on: September 07, 2014, 06:30:00 pm »
Hello guys, just wondered how is the fuel economy on other Skyactiv Mazdas?
My one is a 175 Tourer Auto. According to the trip computer it is averaging 47.5 mpg.
Which is not even close to the official figure. According to Honest John the trip computer shows a worse figure compared to brim to brim measurements.
I have done 380 miles and fuel gauge just went under half a tank.
In my old 3 sport the light usually came on after 420-430 miles and I could never put more than 43 litres of diesel in. The 6's tank is 62 litres compared to my 53 litre 3 sport.
On paper the fuel economy of my new 6 meant to be a lot better than my old 3.
Very curious.

In my 2014 2.2D 150 manual, I get about the same, at 47. Pottering gently about the countryside, I can, at a stretch, add 10 to that.
The only way I can achieve anywhere near what Mazda claim is to find a long, empty dual carriageway, set the cruise at 60 mph in 6th, and try to avoid going to sleep.

My trip computer generally says 47.5mpg, give or take, but it's actually about 45mpg if you work it out by fuel used over miles travelled.  I've done about 6k miles and it's always consistent.  Like PanPilot I can add maybe 10mpg to that if I drive like a nun.

I have a 2.2D 175 auto, 6 months old, just clocked up 10k and never got better than 44 average, and my journeys are mostly motorway cruising. It's the DPF regen cycles every 140 odd miles which kill the economy - until one of those cuts in I get up in the 50's after resetting the computer.

Yeah, I don't know where they get the headline mpg figures from. My '14 2.2D (manual) does between 55 pottering round the countryside, down to 44 in a typical mix of 70 mph dual carriageway and stuck-in-traffic type of use. The only way I can get near the official figure is to set the cruise to a constant 60 mph on an empty, flat, motorway... and who does that? It has been suggested to me that slow traffic for any length of time might cause dpf regens, bumping up consumption, but I don't know the truth of it.

Yes 70mph, traffic, start-stop driving, do not help the consumption. The problem with the figures is that cover the whole EU while UK has the most congested roads. So, it is rare to find an empty road and achieve good mpg. I measure it overall since I got the car to cover a greater variety of driving conditions and get a more accurate figure. The DPF for sure does not like slow speeds.

I bought my 2015 2.2 D 150 Tourer Auto 3 weeks ago, I have done about 400 miles (town and motorway), my average fuel consumption according to the trip computer is about 38.8 mpg - is this normal or do I have a problem?

Thanks Steve, I will try your suggestion, but I will be really disappointed if I am averaging 37-39 mpg.

Yes if you do only average that some thing may be set wrong as i have said before i filled up did 250 miles from Essex to Bournemouth and back plus running around . Motorway A roads B roads plus heavy traffic warm to cold conditions it took 5 gallons to fill it up and that's a 14 plate 2.2 175 auto 18000 miles on the clock when i did the test and i don't drive it light ;D 33000 miles now and it still does about the same.
In fact compared to my last 2 2.2 Toyotas it does much better  :) So if yours is bad maybe it needs to be checked on the dealers computer to see if it's set up right.
