Title: Swap Halogen Unit for Xenon

I have a 2006 Mazda 6 with Halogen headlights. I have a bulb that needs replacing which is easy enough but as the Halogen headlights are not one of the cars strong points, it got me thinking. Could I buy a pair of used Xenon headlight units of eBay and swap them? Do the Xenon units have the same wiring and connectors as the Halogen, are they a straight swap?

I can't answer your actual question, but there's more to having Xenon lights than just fitting them.  New MOT rules came into force recently concerning (among other things) aftermarket fitting of high power lights.  Basically, if a car was fitted with Xenons from new, that car needed to have automatic self-levelling height adjusters (not the thumbwheel-type ones you probably have on your dash), and headlight washers.  It's still possible to fit aftermarket stuff but you need to comply with the new rules for your car to pass an MOT.  Probably a better bet to fit higher light output halogen bulbs to your existing lights instead.
