Gutted potential newbie
« on: November 12, 2017, 05:51:47 am »
Had my heart setting on getting a Mazda 6, toyed with the idea for a while then since my car being a total loss I looked into it more seriously dwindled it down to 2 cars one about 1.5 hours away the other 2 hours away. Then yesterday I joined the forum thought I'd look into different faults etc.... found out the timing chain issue on the 2.2 diesels. Completely put me off, can't believe Mazda never rectified the issue, spoke to a specialist I used for my old car he's also told me stay clear :-(.

What are my best alternatives?

Thank you,

Amy

If you are wary of the Diesels, and do less then 15 k per year, then if you can find a decent one, have a look at the Petrol engines  variants . Mazda Petrol engines  are regarded as pretty bomb proof.

I'm sure I read somewhere Mazda sorted the chain issue out on 2014 upwards, do you know told this chain fits the 2.2d sport engines?

I've seen some petrol I liked but had my heart set on one of these two. Really gutted lol

If you refer to the second generation cars, yes it is a risk and it becomes bigger the further away you buy from a franchise as auction cars could come with no history and/or with a problem.

If you try an approved used car or one from a franchise with service history mentioning checking the chain, you reduce the risk. The franchises can read the wear of the chain and advise you. You will also need to the check the injector seals and the oil pick up.

Old posts imply that any works done, must be re-done in the future as the parts were the same. So the 2014 is not really a cut off date.

It just happened that the first generation three cars to be faulty as well and that is how everybody suggests going for a post 2014 car.

If you are looking for a third generation car, you will not have problems with the chain.

If you are looking for an Asian car, the best alternatives could be the Avensis and the i40 which are going for similar prices and basically there are not any other in the market.

The timing chain problem was with the second generation cars:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda6#Second_generation_.28GH1.3B_2007.E2.80.932012.29

You are looking for the third generation cars:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda6#Third_generation_.28GJ1.3B_2012.E2.80.9306.2F2016.29_.28GL.3B_05.2F2016-.29

These cars do not have the timing chain problem but still you will get all the problems with the oil/fuel if you drive in the city or congested motorways.

Some users change the oil half way through the recommended mileage and Mazda has switched to a "thicker" oil to prolong the durability when oil circulation problems start building up.

Try to buy from a franchise or at least an auction dealer that offers some kind of inspection from AA, RAC, etc. Budget some money for a repair soon after you buy it.
