Oil leak and engine oil level going up.
« on: February 14, 2019, 12:44:14 pm »
Good afternoon to all

I have recently bough this high mileage Mazda 6 2014 2.2
I have a small spot of oil most mornings on the drive and I checked the dipstick and the oil seems to have gone up and not down.
I am checking when cold and the oil is now at the x mark on the dipstick.
This had and oil and filter change 5k miles ago.
The car has done 160k miles and runs well, even now. No noises or anything and last month passed its MOT.
Does anyone have an idea of why the leak and oil going up!? I'm baffled.

As I look at the engine with the bonnet up - the leak seems quite high up as I can see oil has settled on a part to the right of engine about 2/3 of the way up. No idea what the part is, its silver and large. Turbo maybe?

Thank you in advance!

When a dpf regen is interrupted by switching the engine off, diesel is dumped into the oil sump thus the oil level rises.  When it gets to the X mark it needs changed.  I'm pretty sure it'll go into limp mode too.

Buy the right oil ACEA spec and filter and go to a trusty garage to change it and ask them to locate the oil leak. There is some old post about the crank seal which is likely to go at this kind of mileage.

Definately don't drive the car otherwise you will wipe all the bearings. Obviously you haven't been checking it weekly as with most of your other levels.    As APAV   said buy the correct ACEA oil, which will be C2, nothing to do with the viscosity rating.

I have just changed mine using a new Mazda filter, drain plug washer and Castrol Stop/Start 5W-30 C2.
The C rating is an oil with low Sulphated Ash 0.6%,  C3 is 0.8%, this is what clogs up the DPF and in turn causes the regens. Fewer regens =  Lower oil
 contamination.
