Title: Adaptive Front Lighting System
Post by: Ant on January 28, 2018, 10:40:02 am
I have a new Tourer Sport Nav with the optional safety pack which means that car has both the adaptive front lighting system (AFS - the dipped beams 'turn' with the steering to improve visibility as you negotiate corners) and the adaptive LED headlights (ALH - headlights switch automatically between dipped and main beams depending on vehicles ahead). On my previous car, which was a CX-5 I could easily see the AFS working (one of the headlight beams swivelling as I turned the steering wheel) but that car didn’t have ALH.

On the new car I can’t see the headlights turning at all even though the brochure says the car has AFS but I'm wondering if the system works differently where ALH is also fitted.

Can anyone shed any light!!!  ;D

My previously owned 2015 Mazda 6 with led lights had AFS but not ALH and you could see the light beam swivelling as you say.  My current 2014 CX-5 (with non led lights) has both AFS and ALH and you can still see the meam swivel.  I'm pretty sure there's a setting to switch ALH on/off - is it one of the buttons at the right side of the dash, next to your right knee?  Alternatively, if yours is brand new I believe the new lights don't swivel but instead vary the number of leds lit or some other voodoo.

I think as Tall333 has identified, the LED's don't swivel, they switch on and off according to wheel angle. i.e   if you turn left then the right hand portion of the display switches off  and vice versa.

Not sure if it will help but I found this.   http://www.mazda.com/en/innovation/technology/safety/active_safety/alh/

Yeah I'm not sure if the OP's car is a new 2017/2018 model, or a 2015 model as per his profile.

Thanks for your replies. I did wonder if the AFS worked by switching LEDs on and off rather than swivelling the beams so I guess that must be it. You can turn ALH on and off in the vehicle settings in MZD Connect but I couldn’t see any option relating to AFS. Also, I just checked and there’s no switch on the right hand side either - thanks for that suggestion.

Sorry for having the wrong model year. It’s a 2018 model - I only picked it up on Friday. I’ve changed my profile now.

Cheers!
