Car making horrendous knocking noise
« on: February 19, 2018, 07:29:56 am »
So on Saturday I gave the car a bit of power but it lost power and the Traction control lights came on and I lost the rev counter, I managed to get it home then when I parked it on the drive it started making a horrendous knocking noise and the MIL came on so I plugged in the scanner and it came up with P0336 and P0337 all to do with crankshaft sensor.

Has anyone else had this issue and if so what did they need to do?

Does your car have the timing chain changed?

Not as far as I know yet. Car is on 53000 miles. Just ordered a new sensor so will see what that does.

If you have not already done it, I would suggest going to the HOME page and doing a search on "Timing Chain".  Many things to read, some of which might apply to your situation.  But on top of that I would highly recommend contacting your Mazda main dealer with your Chassis number (VIN) to see if it has had the recall done.

I had a confirmation email to say that the recall had been done for the timing chain measurement. When this issue started the dpf light had not come on and still hasn’t.
The 2 codes were linked to the crank sensor so I am hopeful. I would imagine the chain will need doing but I want to see if I can get it running first before I make that decision. Do you think MAZDA will contribute or has that train left the station?

Sorry to be a damp squib but I think you probably know the answer to that one.  :(

Changed the sensor today and now it is showing the code for low input so traced the wiring back and although there is 12v at the connector by the fuel rail it seems this is not transferring to the other side of the connector so hopefully will be able to clean up the connectors and then check again. Here’s hoping.

Update.
Put the new sensor in still didn’t work.
Had a more thorough look today and found that there was an oil leak on the crankshaft oil seal but when taking the pulley off I could move the crankshaft around. Guessing that the knocking is worn bearings due to this. Any ideas?

Oil leak on the crankshaft bearing,  and able to move the shaft, sounds like major surgery.
We had a Vauxhall years ago with similar symptoms, ended up  with a second hand bottom half of an engine.
Was the cheapest option at the time. Hope I am wrong.!

I think to be honest I will park it at the end of the drive and rebuild in the summer. Horrendous though at 52k with full history.

Unfortunately that was the mileage a lot of these engines died. Somebody else did the oil seal recently and was asking questions.
