Mazda are clearly seeking to climb upmarket with specifications to match but I think they are maybe pushing their luck a bit as the Mazda brand doesn't have the same cachet as Audi or BMW but they are pricing to compete in this territory.

Also, as far as the UK market is concerned, the absence of a hatchback option is a big negative. We Brits value the big aperture a hatchback provides but don't necessarily want the added expense of the estate version.

I will certainly have a look at the estate version as I need a hatchback but maybe a Golf hatchback or estate would be a better option.

For those who want a big hatchback then the new Mondeo must be worth looking at.

What's so special about the hatchbacks? They seem very popular in the UK market.. I wonder why. Personally I much prefer the shape of saloons models. The metal parcel shelf welded to the body does give the ride a slightly stiffer and rigid drive on some cars.

What's so special about the hatchbacks?

Simply because they are more versatile when you want to lug things around. Yes, saloons can sometimes look nicer although not always, but if you need to shift bulky items like taking an old piece of furniture down to the tip then the hatchback wins hands down. I need my cars to be practical and the hatchback aperture frequently comes in very useful indeed.

Yup, what he said.

Having said that, I don't think there's quite the same 'wardrobe on wheels' / '2.4 child Volvo man' stigma attached to estate cars any more, some look as nice if not nicer than the saloon or hatch of the same model.

Yes, that's true. I suspect the 'fastback' styling of the new 6 estate/tourer is aimed at hanging on to previous hatchback customers and it may indeed do so. Its the same as BMW do with their 2 series.

However, I need to see it in the flesh, so to speak, as it migt be too big for me. Cars continue to get bigger but my driveway stays the same size!

The new six looks OK, but I also think that not producing a Hatch will loose them a lot of sales. The thing that will stop me buying another 6 are
1) I don't like or trust keyless ignition engine Start / Stop button had it on my MK4 mondeo worked when it wanted too.
2) I would like to be able to choose engine  / Trans combination and spec that suits me not the package that Mazda thinks I would want.
3) As I would not want a diesel and my next car will be an auto I wish Mazda would allow a petrol auto sport estate but this engine  / trans combo is only available on the saloon in mid range spec I would like to spec the car up myself

My keyless entry has worked faultlessly on mine. Wouldn't let this put me off one.

Wow ! !    :D

Look at life through the windscreen, not the rearview mirror.

I'm on my 2nd Gen-2 6 Sport now. Not sure if my next car will be another 6. I do like it from the pics, but Mazda's idea of a Sport is....well visual. You never get uprated suspension or brakes. They ruined the facelift gen-2 Sport. Adding spoilers to the whole range, losing the twin exhausts, smaller turbo....Mazda haven't a clue.

At least the spec levels are good. Anyone know what Nav is in the new 6? Same tomtom as in the Venture?

I had the opportunity to look over the new 6 in Sports Tourer (diesel) guise today and was quite impressed. Quality of materials is significantly better than the old model and it all seems to be very solid and well screwed together. Dash is fairly conventionsal but looks classy so nothing wrong with that. The tourer looks pretty good in the flesh to me and lives up to the photos. Would I buy one? Well I shall wait and see what the motoring magazines have to say when they have conducted full tests.

There is now a full brochure available for the new 6 too.
