My insurance renewal..
« on: August 07, 2012, 07:23:19 am »
came through the post last week and it had gone up a bit from last year. They quoted me £505 to renew with our lass as a named driver.
She has had 'another' bump since last year (in her own car) so it was gonna cost toomuch to keep her on my insurance.
So i phoned up the insurance company to tell them this and they came back with a price of £480. I said i would have a look around first then get back to them. I couldnt find it cheaper anywhere so i rang them back yesterday to pay the £480 and the guy said he would have another look....and he came back with a price of £320 !!

Needless to say i took it out there and then

Well done you! So many people just accept the first quote thrown at them and pay up. I feel a bit sorry for people without the technology skills or ability to negotiate. Having said that, I do tire of insurance companies who leave to the customer to barter them down - some of the worst offenders are the so called "over 50" specialists. As ever - buyer beware! Take your wife out for a slap up meal with the money you've saved. :D

I always shop around at renewal time.  A couple of years ago I got my renewal letter saying they'd checked the market and the lowest price was £X.  I got a quote for £Y from someone else, which saved me about 15% of the premium.  When I phoned the previous insurer, they said they could match it, but I told them where to go as they should have given me a better offer first time round instead of hoping to make a killing if I had accepted their price.

Last time I told an insurer that their renewal was too expensive, they weren't interested.  "That's the premium for the year, take it or leave it".  I always shop around anyway, but I think it may have to be a multi car policy this year to get the overall cost down.

Be sure to check out websites like Quidco and Topcashback, got £50 cashback from Sainsbury's so took my premium down to £260.  You need to get a few quotes first to make sure getting the cashback makes the premium the cheapest but most of the insurance companies are on there so can't really lose out.

I still find you can't beat a good broker. Mines just beaten my best online price by £20. Still loathe paying it though as faster, more valuable cars I owned, cost less in the past and I am not getting younger!
Just beware with cashback sites you need to be quite religious about cleaning your browser cache before doing the quote, so that the cookies are tracked correctly. Also, don't use comparision engines if possible (at least not with your real details  ;) ) as the cashback may not be paid if a comparision site has already taken your details.
