Power steering gone
« on: December 01, 2013, 05:04:22 pm »
Hi,

I was putting my Mazda into the garage and the power steering just went. I would appreciate any advice anyone could give me. I'm not sure I can even drive it to the dealership.

I've just read this in section 5-26 of my manual

"repeatedly jerking the steering wheel left and right while the vehicle is stopped or moving extremely slowly will cause the power steering system to go into protective mode which will make the steering feel heavy, but this does not indicate a malfunction. If this occurs, park the vehicle safely and wait a few minutes for the system to return to normal.

As the power steering light has not appeared I will try my car in an hour and see how it goes.

The Power steering is electric, not hydraulic as on most other cars.
There are 2 fuses which supply power to the Electronic Power Steering Control Module.
There is an EPAS 80 Amp fuse which i suspect is somewhere under the bonnet and there is a 15 Amp Engine Ignition fuse which is probably in the cabin fusebox.

Probably the best place to start i'd say

I left the car for an hour and the power steering started to work normally again. I think all the small maneuvers to get it into my garage is what caused the problem. Thanks

A very useful post - when it (inevitably) happens to me I won't panic now!

Old post, but had a similar problem today when trying to fit th car into a tight space. Came back after a few hours and all ok. Had tracking done today too and afther doing some reseach I thought I had to reset the steering sensors. Hopfully I don't need to do it.
