Mazda 6 - Dissapearing coolant
« on: June 18, 2018, 11:06:09 am »
Hello All

I was wondering if somebody could help and advise on a very strange problem

I have a Mazda 6 05 plate - Automatic 2.0

The car seems to be loosing coolant as I need to top up every few days.

The mechanic advised that there is no leak and the head gasket has been checked using the chemical test which showed the head gasket is ok

I have checked the mats on the inside and they seem to be dry

The one issue I have noticed is that before filling up with coolant in the expansion vessel, the fill line on the left is empty however if I look on the other side of the vessel the fill line is on or near full, which means when I top up the left hand side of the vessel goes up to full and the right hand side goes higher than full, this is strange as from what I can see its just one expansion vessel.

Would this have anything to do with the loss of coolant

Very confused and due to it not being a new car I don't want to spend mega £££ trying to repair it

Any help would be appreciated

Regards
Ali

How does the chemical test work?

Did he do a cylinder compression test and coolant system pressure test?

Not much help, but some years ago I had a Perg 406 1.9 Turbo Diesel. It used coolant at a steady rate.
Had to top up every week or so.No leaks, no steam in the exhaust,no stains on the rad or engine.
Car did 96k miles in four years and I never did solve the problem. Nor could the service people. It just
used coolant.!!

Thank you for your replies

The chemical test, involves effectively a big pipette with a coloured chemical in, which is put into the radiator hose (where you put the the radiator cap on), the engine is then switched on and the bulb at the top of the pippete is pressed a number of times to take in the gas from the radiator/cooling system, the theory is that if there is a mixture of oil and water then the gas will change the colour of the chemical

This has now been done twice and it is proving negative

The other 2 tests have not been done, is this something i will need to do

Hello All quick update incase somebody has a similar problem

The leak was traced to a small crack in the thermostat housing

Once this was changed the issue resolved itself
