Petrol fuel consumption
« on: July 25, 2016, 09:04:43 pm »
I have just completed a round trip from the M25/M40 junction to Sutton Coldfield, a distance of 220miles return. I didn't hang around and had the A/C on during the outward journey and have averaged 41mpg according to the on board computer. Not bad for a 2010, 2.0L auto Sport.

On A Roads and partly on B Roads over the Hills and Wolds I did a similar length trip and my 2.0 litre Petrol returned 40.9 for the trip. In summer running regularly get 38/39 + on A road a motorway type roads.
Overall for a Petrol engine they do not give a bad return. Less than a Diesel, but when purchase price/ cheaper service  costs taken into consideration, to me it compares reasonably well.

I think with all this fuss about emissions from diesel engines, a lot more drivers will switch back to petrol. I've never owned a diesel car but have driven a few in the past. They are no doubt quicker but lack the refinement of the petrol engine. My son has the latest 6 sport 2.2 diesel auto, which no doubt is a fast car, but you still know it's a diesel engine under the bonnet.

I have the current petrol Sport which has quite enough 'go' for my purposes.

Indicated mpg is 43.2, actual is probably about 42 by tank measurement. I am happy with that for a 2 litre lively petrol car. None of the diesel worries and the engine is very flexible indeed.

The only thing that really gets me annoyed about the petrol car is the cost of the road fund license. At £230 per annum, I think it grossly unfair, especially when I only do about 7,000 miles a year. I have decided to pay monthly for it this year. At £20.12 pm, it costs a little more, but appears less painful.

Yes I know it's much cheaper on the latest edition, but I'm not ready to change cars just yet, so unfortunately will have to swallow the high cost of the road fund license for the next year or two.

A year down the line, only 8000 miles tho; trip on the car shows  around 42mpg, tank to tank appears a little less. All things considered I think that's pretty good for a sensible engined petrol car and not one of these ecogreenenviro jobs that just don't go!

I only have my 2010 2.0 petrol M6 a month and have done roughly 1000miles so far but all short 5/6 miles journeys (and school runs less than 1mile) and the fuel computer is indicating 29mpg which is probably about right. Havent had it on a long journey yet so cant say what it'll do but I expect it should increase quite a bit. It being winter/cold air doesn't help either.

To see what the average return for this and other cars, have a look on Honest John's Daily Telegraph
motoring column Real M P G 's. Some interesting results on there.!

I drove up to Edinburgh on Sunday. We had some snow in Cumbria, some more snow on the A73, the car avaraged 39mpg with three people on board and the boot was full too. Cruise control on doing 70 mph according to speedo. On the way back dry day, but same load same speed the car averaged 43mpg. I recently fitted a set of Michelin Crossclimate tyres which meant to be B for fuel economy.
But they are definetely great when it comes to grip.
So overall very happy the fuel economy of my 2.0 ts2 petrol. My Skyactiv auto was a bit worse than this. ????

I can get 44MPG on the computer on a long, leisurely, motorway cruise - and that's with the Gen-2 2.5L Sport with one passenger. I did a similar drive fully loaded and with five of us in the car and the computer said 39MPG. The computer is fairly accurate, being between 3-5% optimistic compared to pump/pump calculations. If I'm in a hurry on the motorway the MPG is around 35. My wife's commute, which involves some queuing and some dual carriageway, and she's not a 'patient' driver :D , returns around 30MPG.

2015 Sport Tourer 165. I get around 41/42 mpg in general driving, normally with two up, a reasonably full tank and a fairly heavy spacesaver spare! Rises a bit on long runs.
