Hi Steve J
The 2002 ts I used to own had a space as you describe, all I could think was that it was for front fog lights, although I think they were fitted in the front spoilers on later models.

Martin6 is correct, the space is for front fog lights.
You can get the kit from mazda dealers, SG Petch is one who provide them although not cheap.
I have considered getting them although don't really know what work is involved as I would prefere to do it myself.
A new stalk would be needed with the foglight setting on it, might be part of the kit.

Thanks for the quick reponse, i do have a stalk with the foglight setting which switches on the rear foglight, does this mean i just need to fit bulbs if so what type are they.

Hi Steve J,
You do need a new stalk when front fogs are fitted. I had mine done after I had purchased my 6.

The stalk you would need Steve j, will have both the front and rear fog light positions on.
I guess the one you have at the moment has just the rear foglight setting as is mine.
