DRLs
« on: January 13, 2014, 11:27:36 am »
Has anyone fitted DRLs on the facelift sport?

Seen these

and I'm tempted to fit them below the front fogs?

A word of caution here. I think that there is a specific height range for fitting these aftermarket DRL.  I'll see if I can find the regulation.

Edit......................

A pair of daytime running lights fitted to a motor vehicle with 4 or more wheels must be fitted with the centre of each light: (a) at least 600mm from the centre of the other light; and (b) not over 510mm from the nearer side of the vehicle;
However, a pair of daytime running lights fitted to a motor vehicle under 1300mm wide may be fitted with the centre of each light not under 400mm from the centre of the other light;
When on, a daytime running light must: (a) show a white or yellow light visible from the front of the vehicle; and (b) not use over 25W; and
Daytime running lights must be wired so they are off when a headlight, other than a headlight being used as a flashing signal, is on.

Why don't you put some LED H11 bulbs in your existing fog light housing, turn them on with your sidelights during the day. You'll need to change your side light bulbs to led as well so they match. That's what I've done, a much cheaper option. Let's face it the fog lights are pretty useless in fog anyway. I used these.

 Then I investigated further and bought these, way better, but they stick out too much at the back, so some cutting of plastic is needed.

Just a suggestion.😀

These will fit, as they only stick out 30mm at the back, I think they post from China though.

As you say, a cheaper option.  But I have an idea that there is a problem (law wise) with using "fog lights" in the manner you suggest.

As foglights are only intended to be used when visibility is seriously reduced ' less than 100m ' and definitely not whilst raining,    I have heard of people been pulled over for having them on when not required so therefore just changing the bulbs would not change the manufacturers intended purpose.
Would  putting LEDs in  be no different than having them on with the foglight bulbs with regards to road traffic rules.
I do know that DRLs must be switched off at nightime and switch off when main lights are on.
On a personal note I find it irritating when people have their fogs on when not necessary, it now seems to have become 'the norm'.
DRL's I find to be too white bright, maybe its an age thing.
Apologies for my mini rant

I take your point, but why is it that only the higher spec cars have fog lights? In reality, they are just for show, otherwise all cars would have them. They make barely any difference in fog anyway. The real distraction on the road is folk with after market HID, where the beam pattern is all over the place. If I ever get pulled by the rozzers for led fogs then I'll post immediately on here!

I really don't understand why people are so intent on fitting daylight running lights when they are not required by law on older cars like mine. This is a fairly new requirement, which to my mind is totally unnecessary in this country. If the light levels drop just turn your lights on, as we have always done. If you have auto lights they switch on automatically anyway, when required. Don't waste your time or money on this pointless task.

Foglights in dense fog make a car more visible to other road users and they are better for improving visibility for the driver compared to main or full beam.
They also do not dazzle on coming traffic in these conditions unlike full beam lights.
As mentioned a lot of manufacturers don't have front foglights as standard equipment but they are definitely not just for show.
In this country we do not really tend to get many occasions when most drivers would have to use them, but when you live in the sticks near water ( rivers, lakes, reservoirs ) front foglights are a blessing.
