Title: Knocking felt through steering, I've changed loads.
Post by: SRRAE on August 03, 2017, 06:32:26 pm
I get a very slight knocking in the steering whenever the car moves.
For example these are the situations where I get a slight knock in the steering and can also be felt through the pedals.

turning the wheel from left to right,
slightly accelerating
slightly braking
going over small potholes / manhole covers.
full lock left or right
turning slightly when reversing off my drive.

So far the following have been replaced and each time made no difference at all.

Both drive shafts (with both CV joints)
Both track rods and track rod ends
Both front upper arm (about 2 years ago)
Both front lower arm (front arm) (about 2 years ago)
Both front lower arm (rear arm) (about 2 years ago)

A few other things. A few days ago I had to emergency stop from about 15mph so the car stopped almost instantly but there was a loud thud from the front passenger wheel/axel.
When on the motorway the front of the car is shaking and the steering wheel also shakes when I get over 60mph.  However sometimes I can get to 70+mph and there's hardly noticeable shudder through the steering and other times 60mph and the car feels like its gonna shake itself to pieces.

I have gone under the car and torqued everything up to what it should be using the service manual, both lower arms, upper arm, track rod even the subframe.

I have to do the suspension top mount as when I was slightly undoing one of the 3 nuts to then torque up to make sure its correct, one sheered off.

So summary is, slight knocking in the car nearly every time there is movement, speeding up, slowing down, turning, going over bumps.

I'm running out of ideas and money.  Any more suggestions of what could be causing this?

thanks in advanced.

Have you had a good look at all the engine mountings ?
Cheers Steve

I've recently changed the lower engine mount.  I check the 2 side ones tomorrow.

Yep could be that if not then at least it rules that out as well. Let's see if thAt cures it first. Before looking for other things.

the vibration at 60mph and then disappearing at 70 mph indicates wheel balancing to me  ;)
