Green mold under rear light
« on: November 05, 2011, 09:49:23 pm »
I had a mazda 3 and noticed it a little, now have a mazda 6 estate with huge rear lights and after a year it covered in a horrible green 'slime' under the edges of all the lamp clusters.
What would remove it without removing the lamp clusters or my wax protection?

Thanks

Stewart

I have the same problem on my '08 Mazda 6. I reckon the only way to get rif would be to take out the cluster and give it a good clean.

Somebody suggested Detol? Would that harm the bodywork or wax protection do you think?

had this on mine when i purchased it 2 weeks ago and looked at all the 6's on the for court and they were the same so would say its just a poor design , so they took the rear lights out and cleaned them ,i shall see how long it will last before they go green again

Mine hasn't gone green but it does get get condensation in them after rain or washing it. Spoken to the Mazda dealer about it and they said its normal.

Hi guys,
The green is mould caused by dampness caused in turn by the crap poor seals around the cluster. They are easy enough to bolt out completely and clean with any bathroom/shower mould (mildew) remover before putting back in. (let dry first)
Also while you're at it have a look in the spare tyre well for water building up. (water getting in around the cluster is one of the guilty symptoms of wheel-well puddles)

Re the water in the spare-wheel-well...

My 2008 model always seemed to have a little water in the bottom, and I put it down to a minor leak somewhere.

I got a new M6 a few weeks ago, and moved all my cr*p from the old car to the new one, including my spare wheel - a full-size alloy.  In the morning, I put some more stuff in the boot and discovered the metal part of the wheel was covered with condensation - presumably the cause of he water in the old car's wheel well.

Now I know why they call it a well!

Hi

I have a 2010 model Mazda 6 and theres quite a bad amount of mold under the perimeter of the rear lights.

I tried a power wash to blast it out but it didnt work.

I think I will have to remove the rear lights in order to clean them. Can anyone point me to a guide for this?.

Secondly, part of the light is separate on the boot door. I looked at it and saw 2 plastic clamp things but could not get them off with medium force and was afraid to be too forceful. How do I remove this part of the light for cleaning also?.

Thanks for any help!!!!!!.

I have the same issue on my 2011 M6 when I bought it only few weeks ago I pointed it out to the dealer he said it was normal. All mazda's seem to get it which is no excuse it's clearly a design fault. My 3 also had it.

This mold problem on the rear lights has been mentioned before, it seems you buy the problem when you buy the car. Mine has a build up, it does not seem to get any worse over the years.

I managed to remove mine too clean. The main cluster was easy enough remove the small flap in boot behind the light and undo 3 bolts with a 10mm spanner the light just pulls out. The lights on the boot lid were a a bit harder and required pulling the trim off the clips enough to get a 10mm socket in, but again pretty straight forward. Once off i found running hot water from the tap into the gap flushed most of the algae out. Small stanley blade got the remains.

From what ive read my new headlight bulbs in the post will be harder to fit.   :(

They are easy to fit. I thought it will be hard too, but simple. Let me know if you have any issues. I did mine in 5 mins without removing anything. Dipped beam and sidelights too.

Don't know what has caused the change, but whilst washing mine today I noticed that the green in and
around the rear lights had almost gone.
Seemed a bit strange with all the wet and damp weather we have been having.
