Rear Bike Carriers for 08-13 Estate
« on: August 16, 2015, 04:40:34 pm »
Anybody got any recommendations for tailgate mounted rear bike carriers for an 08-13 estate?

Not got a towbar, have used roof mounted up until now, but expanding family means the roof is now needed for a roofbox!

Done some searching online, and different sites seem to have different ideas about what models and types will or won't work.   Ideally want one that doesn't cover the number plate / lights, to save faffing around with a board.  Not bothered if the bikes are held quite high - will have a roofbox on anyway, so aerodynamics not really an issue!

Thanks guys.   I've' seen them before and they look pretty decent.  Wasn't totally sure if they fit the 6, so if they do I reckong they are the ones I'll go for!

Any idea if the Bones would cover the number plate and require a board or something?

One other thing - having looked into this some more, I've seen a lot of things saying that you cannot use boot mounted carriers on cars with a spoiler.  Obviously the 6 estate does have a spoiler, so I'm not sure what the deal is with this?  Are they safe to use?

The reason that they cannot be used with the spoiler is that the way the carrier fits means that the weight is taken at the top and these top mounts usually just hook round an edge, in this case the (likely) glued on rear spoiler. I tried this with an older car and although I got the grip round the hatch metal, the weight still distorted the spoiler, the carrier was never used in anger fitted to that car. I have tried a number of these and find them very unsatisfactory, they squirm around creating pressure points on the paint and glass, in my mind a recipe for damage and/or falling off. I have bitten the bullet and bought a proper tow bar mounted carrier, the tow bars are less expensive outside the dealer network of course. The end result is safety and security, bearing in mind that a tailgate mounted unit cannot be locked in place as it is only on with straps. Single electrics on the tow bar are sufficient lessening the cost too.

I'm bringing this across from our CX-5 forum, where members have the same problem with spoilers. One ingenious member has made an adaptation to his bike rack by adding two triangular brackets to the framework which enables the straps to have a direct line of tension from the attachment point to the bike frame, without distorting the spoiler.

Perhaps this might assist Mazda 6 members in the same predicament.
