rust on underbody
« on: April 17, 2012, 07:13:06 pm »
Hello,
just been looking under car and noticed quite a bit of rust on the sub frame/ cross member etc.
The car is 2005 reg.
Has anyone had rustproofing and sealing done on their cars or know of anyone who has.
Any recommendations as to what to use (waxoyl or dinitrol ) and who by as I was thinking about possibly getting it done professionally.
I live near Preston, Lancashire.

Surface rust but it looks quite heavy, you cannot see any clean metal.

Had the car checked underneath.
Lot of rust along sills, bubbleling along edge of hatch, rust on suspension parts but the guy said that area would take long time to rust through due to thickness of metal.
He mentioned plenty of jap cars have these issues due to the lack of rust protection/underseal as in japan they don't use salt on their roads.
I decided to have rust proofing done on car so used a company called Chassis Clean near Manchester.
They used Dinitrol products for rust proofing and underbody seal.
Any heavy corroded areas they treated with a rust converter first, nothing was bad enough to require welding.
With the hatch area they removed the bubbled paint and treated with a rust converter and advised to treat with 2-3 coats of primer and then paint.I already have a touch up paint for my car.
The guy was very knowledgeable with plenty of advice and explained everything he done and showed under car afterwards.
They even washed and polished the car as well.
Its not cheap though, cost £470 and took 2 days in total due to drying times.
