Is the Katano trim known as something else?  I see very few around, also it isn't even listed as a model in the Forum profile options.

just seems very odd that it doesn't seem to be recognised much as a valid model

Mazda tend to give a spec name to all their cars as they approach the end of the production run and the change to a new generation.  These named versions, usually have very different specs to the normal models. For example you could see a "TS"  model with "Sports" suspension and body kits. And generally uprated interiors.

They are only available for a relatively short period of time before the "New" generation becomes available.
Being cynical, it is a chance for them to use up the parts of the more expensive factory options, leaving less capital tied up in spares that they won't use during the remaining production run of the outgoing generation.

This is a practise employed by many motor manufacturers.

There have also been a Mazda 6,  Sakata ,  Tamura, Takara,  Kumano, & Zugara
Look at life through the windscreen, not the rearview mirror.

As with other manufacturers, you tend to get a very decent spec on the vehicle at a very decent price.
