Intermittent Shaking at Speed (not wheel balancing?)
« on: April 24, 2012, 08:07:08 pm »
Hi,

When I'm travelling at between 70 - 85 mph (the latter speed on the German autobahns of course) I get a strange shaking / judder of the car.

It's more of a whole car judder that occurs a good second apart from each other - I'd have thought the gap of a second rules out the usual wheel balancing issue as I'd have thought that would be more of a constant vibration given the speed the wheels are turning.

It happens if I depress the clutch or put it neutral and cost at the above speeds so really not sure what it could be?

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Craig

Anti-roll bar drop link bush may need changing?

-Can cause a vibration to come and go as the bush moves position

Interesting post about ARB droplink bushes. Had my 2009 Sport , 29k miles, just over a week and noticed the same thing at the same speeds. Assumed one of the wheels wasn't balanced correctly as they all came off to be refurbished, pre delivery.

have you checked the wheels are on tight ?  8) i got a shake like you describe when kwick fit chimps didnt tighten 1 wheel.

When the anti roll bar link went on my mondo it was more a metal on metal sound didnt make the car shake as there designed to help the car turn

I have had this twice, both times as the rear tyres wore down (about 30k miles). I had a 2.2d sport estate. Both times it was put down to the tyres wearing unevenly and going out of shape. Balancing would not fix the problem. Only replacing the rear tyres fixed the problem. If you ran your hand accross the tread you could feel the tread pattern was  slightly raised on one edge and not flat all the way across.

On my current car, I now swap wheels back to front every 12.5k at service times.

@andyk3090
Will check mine as they all came off for refurb, predelivery so they may have replaced the wheels in a different order where the tyres are worn differently.

I've had that before too, 50p shape tyres (inner edge) - Although the vibration for me was most noticable at about 30mph
