Auxiliary belt refitting help
« on: August 31, 2014, 07:38:39 pm »
Hi, I have an 07 Diesel Mazda 6. I've replaced the timing belt and tensioner, and also the auxiliary/alternator belt but I can't seem to get it to work and I'm unsure how the tensioner works. Seems seized but looks like if it were to move, it would just get tighter/further away from where it needs to be to get the belt on. - New belt is identical in length to the old one. To get it off, I had to take the idler part of the tensioner off as I didn't realise there were two bolts holding it on.
Any help would be great!

Checked the belt routing diagram. I've got that correct.
And I believe I just don't have the force to compress the tensioner arm as the spring is so strong. Is this normal?

Hi,
If your tensioner is the same as my old 6, 2004 TD I took the tensioner off then compressed it using a g-clamp. There is a small hole in the top of it where you can put a small Allen right through it to hold it in place, refit the tensioner then remove the Allen key once the belt is fitted. It will find the correct tension itself.
Hope this helps.

Andy.

Hi Andy, you're talking about the timing belt tensioner.
the drive/alternator/auxiliary belt has a different type of separate tensioner. I've ordered a new one, which should arrive tomorrow. I'll see if that's the limiting factor.
