Mazda 6 2014 Plastic Oil Pickup
« on: May 18, 2020, 11:47:22 am »
Hi Folks,
Mazda 6 2.2D SkyActive 2014. Had the low oli pressure light on and as I'm on my 2nd engine thought I'd take the sump off and clean the strainer. To be honest, I'd decided after the last time that I should do this periodically, so this is the first time. The engine has 28,000 miles on it and have chaned the oil & filter at 7-8000mile intervals.
So I finally managed to get the sump off and the pickup strainer has a fair bit of crud on it. It's a plastic one like none I've ever seen and it can't come off as one of the bolts seems to have gone in before the rest of the engine was built around it....
It looks like the plastic pickup clips together. If so, this would likely be ideal to clean the mesh, but I don't want to start easing it apart with a screwdriver before checking if anyone has experience with these.
Anyone know if I can take it apart in situ to clean the mesh?

Thanks

Graham

Hi Bradders

Did you ever get to the bottom of this...  issues my car suffers may well lead me down this route

Almost, I think...... So, the pickup is definitely blocking with carbon. It's quite easy to clean in situ with bottle brushes and WD40 or degreaser. Mine lasted 2000 miles between cleans.

The accepted cause of this is exhaust gases getting by the copper injector seals so I took it to a diesel specialist who called me a couple of hours later and said he couldn't find any evidence that exhaust gases were leaking. I drove for around another 1000 miles and then dropped the sump to check - Lots more crud build up....

So I thought I'd tighten the injector camps a bit. Now these are meant to be torqued to 4NM (2NM before recall) and then turned by another amount (around 270 deg) to stretch the bolts and lock the nut. I think this takes the actual torque to around 9NM. When I got the torque wrench on the bolts and set to 6NM, it took many ratchets to get it even to 6NM. This was the case for all 8 bolts. I think all the bolts either hadn't been torqued correctly or came loose after only 30,000 miles which is a bit worrying. My current theory is that they were only leaking when reving the car to high RPM, hence the reason why the specialist couldn't find an issue.

Now, bearing in mind I had already had the engine replaced for exactly this issue only 30,000 miles before, there is either a fault with these bolts that the recall hasn't fixed, or the dealer didn't install the injector clamps properly, which I consider gross incompetence.

So, I've tightened the clamps, I've done about another 1000 miles and everything is good. Once I get to 3000 miles I'll start to believe it's sorted! I'm heading to Slovakia in 2 weeks so fingers crossed.......

BTW - 'Vehicle System Inspection Required' coming on over 2000RPM is the indication that the strainer is becoming blocked. Gives you time to take action. I drove carefully from Newcastle to Inverness with this and don't seem to have done any harm.

Good Luck!

Bradders  thanks for the reply

I iwill get the oil pan off and have a look when I can and also check the injector clamps.

I had the manifold off at the weekend and the valves are pretty bad with  buit up carbon and ports 4 also seemed to have quite a bit of wet oil.

Ive noticed the oill level went up quite a lot and now has gone back down after a a long motorway journey. Going to keep an eye on it to see if it now goes below the normal line in case oil is getting vented out the exhaust :(

would you suppose the turbo 'A' underboost error I also get occasionally could be oil pick up related as well? I get the error along side scbs dsc but not always.  I would think blocked inlet valves would be more the cuplrit here.

Cheers

No worries - Just wondering though. Do you have a diesel? The injector torque issues and strainer blocking issues are generally restricted to them. On your profile it says you're petrol so it might be a waste of your time to do this. The carbon buildup you're experiencing looks to be on the exhaust side of the engine rather than the oil side.

Yep diesel, thought I had set the profile on registration but apparently not!

All the valves looked quite heavy on carbon build up but the  4th set seemed worse and also had visible wet oil in the ports.

Thanks
