Mazda 6 turbo issue...
« on: January 04, 2016, 08:33:53 pm »
Hi All,
Right, the story so far…
I bought a Mazda 6, let’s call her Maude, TS2 2.0l Diesel (143) 2007 estate with a BOSE sound system and 86000miles on the clock. Good nick in general and well serviced.
6 months in and Maude has a slight problem of smoke at start up and struggling to start. Heater plugs and seals replaced, problem solved.
Then a year ago Maude’s limp mode engaged, Mazda wanted many £s to recycle/clean DPF, I didn’t go for that. Instead the DPF was removed and engine remapped for performance at another garage (nice guy and very helpful) for the same the same cost. From then on excellent performance and MPG from Maude.
Maude’s now on 105000miles ish.
Until… Maude’s turbo gave up about 8 weeks ago. New (reconditioned) turbo went in by a turbo specialist (whom seem genuine folks) and this is where I’m asking for help/advice.
After turbo went in Maude had very very slow acceleration up until about 1750 – 2250 rpm then woosh off like a shot. Turbo people said it’s probably the EGR.
I called the remap garage to see if he could map out the EGR, unfortunately the software version for Maude won’t allow that, I could get latest software version from Mazda (who probably want many many £s for software update/upgrade) and then he could map out EGR.
Instead I went to a different garage (whom also seem genuine folks) who took off cleaned and checked over EGR and found no issue. EGR garage also checked for fault codes and found none. EGR garage said she sounds rough as hell when air intake box taken off and could be a problem with waste gate in turbo.
This is where I’m at now…
This coming Saturday Maude is going to the turbo garage so they can check, for free, the waste gate and general turbo (still in warrantee) condition.
As I seem to have a propensity for problem cars I have become very cynical and almost always expect the worst. I want to keep Maude because she’s a great ride and I’ve spent quite a lot on her now and cant/don’t want to ditch her and start over again, also I’ve just married am trying to buy a house and wifey wants babies…NOW!!!!
Anyone out there have any more suggestions as to what may or may not be the problem…?
Any advice greatly appreciated, be it about the car or my life…
Gaz.

You might want to try  temporary unplugging your MAF that is on the air piping after the filter.  Take the car for a run  and if the problem goes away, ie good acceleration though a bit smokey, it could well be the the MAF that needs changing.
It is a five minute job to change, with just a couple of screws ( though you may need  some special torx bits to fit, but they are about £10 for a set of  about ten  different heads.)
I changed mine on a Rover 45 diesel at 70 k and it cured the low rpm sluggishness
The MAF may cost about £100 now as it is some years since I changed mine and have since sold the car with 114K on the clock and it used to go like stink.

So what was the problem with lack of power under 2000rpm
had my dpf removed and car remapped after turbo went and wrecked dpf and she never had the same power again.
Mapping garage blamed turbo guy , turbo guy blamed garage so never got it sorted just drove it for 2 years till it started running rough at idle 2 weeks ago went to get suction control valve but car has completely giving up now pile of smoke wont rev up not sure if SCV will sort it
