P0471 code. Wet weather good, dry weather bad for me.
« on: November 27, 2019, 03:55:44 pm »
I have a 2014 2.2 diesel sport nav with an intermittant problem depending on the weather. Long story short, exhaust pressure sensor replaced by my local garage after P0471 error code but that didn't fix the problem. They now think it may be an electrical problem. Mazda dealer says the new pressure sensor needs replacing with a new modified sensor (Technical Service Bulletin R073/18).

The strange thing is that the engine error light only illuminates on dry days. On wet days it stays off. The car drives normally on both wet and dry days.

Having already spent more that £200 I am not inclined to spend another £150 at the Mazda dealer to try the modified sensor to see if that works.

Does the wet/dry weather scenario suggest a bad electrical connection? My garage doesn't do electrics and I don't have much faith in the Mazda dealer having the necessary skills to test the electrics.

Should I try a specialist engine diagnostic company?

I would be interested in any suggestions that you may have.

If there is a modified sensor, then this is what the garage should have fit in the first place.

Fit the modified sensor and return the one you just fitted or sell it online to get something back.

If the problem is still there, then you have to think about what to do next. But so far it seems that the garage led you down the sensor route and the dealer says that there is a better part. So there is a very good chance that you will fix it by putting the right sensor in. Interesting that the dealer costs less than the local garage.

Thanks for responding. The total of over £200 includes the Mazda dealer's charge for checking the error codes. The cost for supplying and fitting is about the same. Funnily enough the garage were quoted nearly twice the cost by the Mazda dealer for the sensor compared to what the dealer is quoting me. The garage just gave the dealer the old part number.

The modified part is only available from Mazda but the garage were not told any of this when they tried to obtain the part from the dealer. Apparently this is a common failure on the Mazda and the garage has fitted quite a few, mine is the first one that hasn't worked. I just find it strange that the wet/dry weather has such an effect.

If I get the dealer to fit the modified sensor and it works then I think that I should be able to get a refund on the other part as not being fit for purpose.

The only reason that I used the garage was because the dealer couldn't read the fault code as the scanner was away being repaired and I was about to drive 300 miles which I didn't want to do without knowing what the problem was.

If they tell you the full truth, it is a series of unfortunate events. Go for the new type of sensor. I hope it will work and you will also get a refund for the old one.

I had a similar occurance following a long drive at 50mph avg speed, then cranking it up to 70mph in 4th. Just as the Regen finished I got DPF INSPECTION REQUIRED come up on the dash. Car still drove ok. When I got home I put Forscan on it and found error code
P243C:00.
After a visit to the dealer it was found to be the Exhaust Differential Pressure sensor            (across the DPF) that sits left side looking aft under the heat shield at the rear of engine. Two bolts, two push on pipes and an electrical fitting. Just shy of £200.  Though part was not cheap. It seems there was a problem with these sensors, but instead of changing them all they waited until one failed in warranty then changed it or charged the customer after warranty.

Many thanks for the info. Although the error code is different the cause seems to be the same. I will go back to the dealer tomorrow and discuss it with them.
I can only assume that they didn't do a recall because it wasn't safety related and it would have cost them a lot of money.
