Clutch gone?
« on: August 12, 2017, 05:46:50 pm »
I've got a 2011 mazda 6 2.2d and during the last week I noticed the engine was noisier than normal at high revs. Yesterday I noticed the clutch pedal vibrating especially when changing at low gears. I planned to take it to a garage on Monday thinking it would be ok until then. Big mistake  :( Today I was driving in 2nd gear and suddenly I heard a horrible banging and knocking sound. When I put my foot on the clutch it got permanently stuck to the floor. I'm guessing the clutch is gone but I'm worried there might be more damage. I'll find out on Monday for sure what's wrong but I'm curious if this has happened to anyone else?

The pedal could be hydraulic problems. You could check the brake fluid level.

I have no idea about the noises but they never sound good.

Does the car still move? Did you continue driving by changing gears without the clutch?

I cut the engine as soon as it happened and rolled off the road in neutral. I can't change to any other gear now.

Later while the car was stationary I had to briefly turn on the engine to get the steering wheel to unlock and the noises were horrible.

I'll check the brake fluid when I go to the car tomorrow as it's currently 30 miles from where I live.

As suspected the clutch is gone so it'll need to be replaced along with the dual-mass flywheel. The parts are coming to about £1000 and labor £300.

Given that the car has only got 85k miles and I've already had to get the head gasket done, I'm not impressed with my first year owning a mazda.

Update:
The engine had main bearing failure with a broken crankshaft and con rods   :(

My local garage was suggesting a second-hand engine but after doing some research I found a guy who specialized in these engines and re-conditions them so I went for that option. He also re-conditioned the turbo, removed the DPF and did an EGR delete.

The car feels so much better now, so here's hoping it lasts  :P

 :o :o :o

So first the clutch and now the engine? Did you replace the dual mass flywheel? How much did all these works cost?

It was all the one incident. I paid for a new clutch and dual mass flywheel and when they the old ones were taken out of the car the damage to the engine was noticed.

Local garage reckoned the flywheel went but they guy who fixed the engine said the flywheel didn't look any different to working ones he took off on other cars. From the engine side  he said the oil pump gauze wasn't too bad although the oil was very diluted.
The only thing he could point out was that it looked like the bottom end of the engine had been apart before.

Total cost was in the region of 4k!

That is a lot of money! It seems that your car had troubles before you got it. How long do you own it and what is the mileage? Hopefully now it will be trouble free and you will manage to cut your loses by adding some mileage to it.

Cheers apav, I've had the car just over a year and there's about 82k miles on it. I was given 6 months warranty with the engine work so I'll be holding on to it for that length at least.

It feels like the move from traditional values of the company to the business alliance with other companies and the hipster zoom zoom trend resulted in a new era of cars that won't go for ever but will sell easier on PCP.
