The underlying problem is that modern car paints are water based and intrinsically softer than the preceding harder and more durable cellulose finishes which incorporated more volatiles. The same thing applies to domestic interior and exterior house paints which are inferior to their predecessors (but still cost a lot more).

Some car manufacturers seem to apply thicker coatings which obviously helps to some extent but Mazda do have a bit of a reputation for thin finishes. It might be something to do with the fact that in Japan people expect to change their cars after no more than three years (the warranty period) and older vehcles tend to be exported to New Zealand which is full of former model Japanese cars in various states of disintegration! I have seen this for myself.
