Car wont Start, Red Key
« on: February 15, 2020, 01:46:12 pm »
My car wont start, a red key comes up on the dash and the start button is also red,
the car has power as the central locking works and the internal lights come on.
The hazard lights flash but the indicators dont, when tried seperately.

The headlights work and so do the break lights.

Ive seen suggestions to check the BCM is dry and clean, next to the fuse box in the footwell. So i'll be checking that.
I also read that there are earth points that can get dirty and cuase this issue. But Im struggling to find diagrams/pictures of where the earth points will be, can anyone shed any light on this?

They are on the wings. But there may be some more hidden away.

Ill see if i can find them, Im beginning to think that the immobiliser has kicked in on the car, does it sound like a faulty earth can cause this?

I do not think it is the immobiliser.

All the old posts managed to sort out by cleaning the earth points or paying over the top and replacing expensive parts at the dealer.

As you are standing in front of the car looking at the engine bay, on the left hand side there is an earth point on the front of th wing. I have no idea whether this is the one they were talking about. In the old posts they refer to an earth point under the wing. Maybe there is a description barrier in finding out what really happens here but some of the earth points are very easy to spot and it is not hard to look around and find some more if the problem does not go away.

Just go through the old posts and follow the advice/description.

Ive had it towed now to the Mazda garage, for diagnostics.
But I had also noticed that the steering lock hadn't engaged, and since googling Ive noticed that if it fails it will lock the engine down.
and since looking on this forum I have noticed that there are similar posts.

Unfortunately for me it sounds like a new steering lock and ignition and keys will cost over £750, so im waiting to hear the outcome of that.

For those that wanted to know what was wrong, Ive finally found out today.
My local Mazda have appalling customer service but thats another moan, for me to take up with Mazda UK.
Short and small of it the steering lock has failed.

£880 to fix. Its not cheap but Im glad its not anything like some of the costs Id seen online to fix similar issues

Is there anyway to force start the car? I fear I have the same issue.

You could check that by letting it roll down a hill and check whether starts in gear but will you do if it does not start? How will you bring it back home? If you have road assistance, they could try to make it start or move it to a garage.
