Undertray Washed Off
« on: August 15, 2012, 08:08:40 pm »
Hey

Well with the heavy rain today I drove through a puddle only to here a strange grinding noise, parked up to find part of the undertray hanging off. From in line with the front of the front doors back about 1ft, it was very easy to rip the broken bits off as its like laminated cardboard, absolute rubbish to be honest.

Once I got to work I spoke to a friend who has a Mazda 6 and they have had the same problem but have not bothered to replace it, has anyone on here had this happen...?

Does anyone know the part number for the tray and how much roughly it will cost?

Thanks

For those interested I went to my local Mazda dealer today, the parts required:-

2 under shields costing £265  :o

I was a little shocked considering they are nothing more than cardboard, I asked were they important and the reply was "your better off without them, they are only there to protect the car if you ground it"

Apparently they are very prone to failing due to being held on by only a few screws, but not covered by warranty if forced off by water. Strange when they are underneath the car were there is water.

So for now I will see if I can get a set from a breakers yard  ::)

Yes, I think this is a common problem as mentioned on the HJ website http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/mazda/6-2008/?section=bad

I think you will find that the under tray is there to improve the aerodynamics of the car rather than protect the engine.

Thanks for the replys, but the undershields that came off are the ones directly below the front doors, they come from behind the front wheels along the car to the back wheels. The engine undertray is fine.

Its only the first few inches on both sides that broke off, and the exact sames parts have broken off my friends Mazda 6.

None on ebay etc.. and as my dealer said they are not actually protecting anything then Im not in a rush to replace as the next time I go through a deep puddle then the same thing will happen, and in Harrogate it rains a lot.

They are probably there to protect the underneath from stone chips, as the car is not undersealed.

Same happened to me.  Just ended up ripping off the damaged corner.
