Rear light lenses
« on: November 21, 2011, 11:23:02 am »
Whilst washing my 6 at the weekend i noticed a significant build up of pond life / green algae growing under the edge of the rear light clusters.
Does anybody know of an easy way to remove this unsightly stuff without having to remove the whole cluster housing??
I seem to remember a thread on the old forum regarding this problem, but obviously that's no longer there.
If the full light unit needs to be removed does anybody have a DIY'ers guide to removal as it doesn't look very straight forward to do?

Regards

open /remove flap in the inner trim panel behind the rear lights. Unpluge 2 x cable plugs per light. Unscrew 3 x 10mm nuts holding the light clusters on. pull the whole light cluster to the rear and the whole unit comes away. Nice and easy to do. Install is the reverse of above, make surethe locating lug at the back ofthe light locates properly.

Ive got exactly the same problem.

I bought a 2008 6 Sport in Feb this year from a Mazda dealer.

When I took it for a test drive I noticed green mould around the inside edges of the light clusters and reflectors on the hatch door. They had a generous collection of dead dried bugs inside too! A week later I went to pick it up and they hadnt touched this at all.

So much for the lauded Mazda pre-inspection on used vehicles and they managed to miss this completely!  Had to take the car back to get the dealer to clean them out.

Now 6 months later the green mould is coming back.

I think they need to be treated with an anti fungal liquid but I'm concerned that any chemical treatment might make the clear lenses go cloudy.

Any suggestions for a suitable treatment?

Has anyone else had this happen?

Cheers

B R

My 2008 car has the same pond life. I looked at several other 6's before finally buying one, I think they all suffered from this issue to varying degrees. Apparently it's not too tricky to pop out the light cluster to clean behind but haven't bothered to try it on mine yet.

Every time you wash the car blast the edges with the hose! Not a pressure washer though! It works on my 2010 sport!

I think the discussion is about dirt building up on the inside of the light cluster unit rather than the outside. I have noticed the same with my 58 Sport.
