Could anyone please help. I have a 2009 tdi sport, finished work tonight and had a flat battery. A work colleague jump started it for me, the amber engine management light was on continuously on the way home. Have moved closer to work so the car only does about 3mile a day. What with these cold and dark mornings and evenings, and everything electrical being on she's just not getting enough charge back in. Getting a new battery tomorrow, but concerned about engine management light. Could it just be to do with the battery?

After you disconnect old battery,
Turn on headlights and wait 5 mins before connecting new one. Leave lights on until new battery is connected.
Turn lights off
Restart and hopefully all ok
When running, turn steering full lock to lock

Not sure where you got the above information from but I wouldn't do it that way.
The way to reset the ECU is disconnect the battery. Leave it off for 10-15 minutes. Reconnect the battery, start the engine and leave to idle for a further 10-15 minutes without switching on any lights or touching the accelerator. Switch off the engine again and restart it and take it for a drive.
Turning the steering wheel puts a load on the engine and induces higher fueling. When you reset the ECU you let it idle with no loads on the engine so the ECU can learn the idle fuel map again.
