2.0L petrol rattle on start up
« on: June 08, 2012, 04:22:45 pm »
Hi guys, my 2.0L petrol rattles at the top end of the engine when i start it from cold or when the oil is hot, just for a second. Dealer has had a look before and when i went to see him again today he suggested changing the oil, at my expense of course, even though it's still under waranty. It sounds like the oil is draining fron the top end. It's only done 7000 miles!

I had a rattly engine with my Mazda 6 which I discovered too late was a faulty oil pump.  End result was a knackered engine.  Presume this is unlikely as your car is much newer.

The cam chain is tensioned by oil pressure, so it may rattle until the correct oil pressure is acheived. It's a characteristic of some (non-Mazda) engines, but I've not seen this mentioned about this engine, so needs investigating! Also, hydraulic tappets aren't fitted to these engines, so it can't be that!
