cutting the sub woofer foam/sponge to fit spare 16" wheel
« on: February 28, 2014, 10:22:20 am »
Hello,
Sorry subject is vague, wasn't sure on how to word it.

I have a 16" spare with tyre that i need to remove form boot and place in the proper place - needs space for child buggy!

Does anyone who has done this, advise:
how easy was it to do?
how long roughly?
is the foam/sponge easy to cut?  what tools did you use?
did you have to cut much of for it to fit?
is there a fixing pin for the spare wheel or do i need to purchase one?

anything else people think i may need to know is much appreciated.

am doing tomorrow as 2nd baby due in a week and weather looks like on my side
if time and cold allows will take some pics for ref

Thanks for all and anything,
Neil

I think you could be in luck mate.

Andy Wolfie has done this and he has an excellent set of instructions. If you PM him I am sure he will forward then onto you. I am at work and cannot forward on his instructions.

Thanks for the guide Andy.
Was surprised to see there was no actual surround left at all!

I wonder if not another way to trim this better
now i am thinking run flats and a foam pump would be better - missus is not happy as she is classing this as 'modding' the car and it will never stop!

My pleasure, it is a bit extreme and there isn't much foam left after but the peace of mind it gives more than makes up for it! Just tell your missus it's better than having to hope the liquid gunk fixes a tyre when it's pouring down with rain miles from home! That should swing it! Lol

Funnily enough, i did use that tack and was appreciated!

How did you unplug the sub? or did you just cut the foam around the cable?

Would like too see if can just trim the bottom or something so retain as much as i can.

Glad to hear that story helped! Lol, as for the sub woofer, I am sure there is a plug on it and I disconnected that and popped it out, it didn't give me any problems anyway

All sorted, thanks guys.
In the end didn't butcher the foam, cut a piece of 6mm ply to fill the enter spare and all seems fine so far!

will a 16" wheel be ok to use as a spare?
my 6 has the 18" sport alloys on it and i assumed that i would have to get a 18" for a spare

I understand that the 16" wheel will fit fine, I think you need to make sure that the profile of the tyre is 65 to make the overall profile the same as the 18", I think the tyre size you need is 205-65-16

Thanks Andy, can you tell me what profile tyre i would need for a 17" wheel aswell please.
I've noticed that 17" Mazda 3 alloys pop on Ebay now and then, would these fit?

I thinks it's 215-50-17 you need for the 17" wheels
